Overcoming Doubts with the "I've Been Through This" Approach

1/23/2024

When self-doubt creeps in, take a moment to reflect on your past successes and achievements. Rather than dwelling on the past, recall situations where you emerged victorious. Remind yourself: I've done this before. I can do it again.

This approach is effective and even endorsed by legends like golf icon Tiger Woods. When facing a critical golf shot to sink the ball into the hole, Woods mentally reassures himself: You've done this thousands of times. Relax, step up, and make the shot.

Diana Binn, senior vice president of Canadian financial and insurance conglomerate Manulife, shared her perspective: "It's all about experience. Initially, you think, 'I don't know anything about this, and I'll fail.' Then, you dive in, tackle the challenge, and move on to the next one. You might feel clueless about it again, but you convince yourself that you'll figure it out and succeed."

So, what's holding you back from adopting a similar mindset?

The I've Been Through This approach is a powerful tool to combat self-doubt and fear of the unknown. Here are a few reasons why you might hesitate and how to overcome these obstacles:

1. Fear of Failure:

Many people hesitate due to a fear of failure. Instead of seeing failure as the end, view it as a part of the learning process. Every challenge provides an opportunity to grow and improve.

2. Lack of Confidence:

Building confidence takes time, but reminding yourself of past achievements can boost your self-assurance. Recognize that you have faced challenges before and emerged stronger.

3. Comfort Zone Concerns:

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be intimidating. However, growth often happens beyond familiar territory. Embrace challenges as chances to expand your skills and knowledge.

4. Perfectionism:

Striving for perfection can be paralyzing. Understand that it's okay to make mistakes and that it’s a natural part of the journey. Focus on progress rather than perfection.

By acknowledging your past triumphs, you can build the confidence to face new challenges. So, the next time doubt creeps in, remind yourself of your past victories, relax, and tackle the task at hand with the assurance that you've navigated similar paths before.
